Body Back Buddy? More like Body Back BFF!

by Jesikah G. from Phoenix, AZ USA on 2010-06-18
The BBB and the Mini-BBB do exactly what they say they do. I suffer from muscle spasms in my back and my husband is just not patient enough to adequately help alleviate the pain with traditional hands-on trigger point therapy. Its okay, he knows he’s impatient with it. I was finding myself leaning up against any pointy surface just to get a “fix”. LOL Now when I’m suffering, I just pull out the BBB and go to town. Its soooo difficult to stop after 30sec of working one area, but please learn from my mistakes when I tell you that if you exceed the recommended treatment time, your body WILL generate an injury response and your back will feel like one giant bruise for a few days.

My only “complaint” is that the flash (seam from the top and bottom of the mold) left behind from the molding process was not ground down completely therefore leaving what feels like a sharp edge when pressed into my skin. I have not tried to grind this down on my own yet, mostly for fear of marring the aesthetics of the BBB.

All in all, I love my BBB and Mini-BBB. I keep the Mini-BBB in my desk at work and take it with me whenever I travel. The Mini doesn’t stand a chance in a competition against the BBB, but I don’t think its intended to be straight up substitute for the full-sized BBB. Its perfect for that little “pick me up” in the middle of the day when I feel a spasm coming on. I’ve owned my BBB’s for just over a month now and I notice that I have used them less and less each week. Since the only thing that has changed for me is the addition of the BBB into my routine, I can only conclude that the treatment is helping me heal. :-)

Great pain reliever!

by M. Sellers from Texas on 2010-06-17
Love love love these two little tools. So great in helping me with my trigger points.

Fantastic!

by Lee from Venice, CA on 2010-05-22
I’ve only used this for a week, but I feel it’s already paid for itself! Between my active lifestyle and the fact I sleep on my side I often get sore muscles particularly between my shoulder blades. Prior to the back buddy the best way to sooth those muscles was paying for a massage. The last time I started feeling sore I used the back buddy on the trigger points and used the round end to rub up and down next to my spine, 3 days later the soreness is all but gone(about the same as a professional massage). I’m sure I’ll learn more ways to use this as time goes on, as for the complaints in other reviews that it’s cheap plastic and large – the main back buddy is a very heavy duty type of plastic, I feel it will last a lifetime and I store it in my closet so it just hangs over the rod out of the way. This is one purchase that may be worth it’s weight in gold!!!!

Reach those Hard to Reach Places! — Great Tool

by Kustomizer from Texas Panhandle on 2010-03-26
This is a wonderful tool. It reaches the exact spot that needs massaging. I also read a lot about accupressure and found that most of the pressure needs to be pulsing type pressure instead of a long steady pressure. It works for me. Several friends have purchased one and they love it too. Great for anyone who wants to relax muscle tension and relieve aching muscles and trigger points. I’ve even been able to massage places I didn’t even know hurt (tops of my feet for example).

Pain equates to less stress

by Adam J. Russo from Haddam, CT on 2010-04-23
So your wondering if this piece of rubber is worth the money? Well it depends what’s wrong with you. There is no substitute for a good chiropractor, but if you cannot afford one/have been let down before like I have by others, this product might be a shadowy glimmer of hope for you. This product should not be intended to be used more than once a day, and should only be used as an alignment tool only as necessary. With that being said. For those of use that have alignment problems caused by stress that leads to short tense muscle pulling out vertebra out of whack this might be the solution your looking for.

What causes short tense muscle and do I have it?

Stress, as you hear on TV takes it’s toll on our bodies, especially extended periods of high stress. Naturally, when stressed our bodies get in that fight/flight mode that never seems to go away which in theory leads to teeth grinding (instinctively clenching our teeth for protection against a brutal attack), clenching our fists and muscles we don’t even know we’re using (especially the back). Again, I am no doctor although I have had years of personal experience in this department, but if you find yourself arching your back and/or self adjusting (“popping”) your back, this could remotely be a possibility for you. In this case, professionally and personally adjusting your back all the time could aggravate the situation and lose that stiffness our backs need to stay in place (since cracking our backs is NOT natural).

It should also be noted that sitting, overdeveloping muscles, or being in certain contorted stances/positions may also lead to short muscle development. (All of which I have done)

What does this product do?

For me, I use this product to penetrate deep stiff muscles in my back with contribute to my upper back problems. This product is no joyride and for me is extremely painful, but I find this tool to be extremely effective in loosening my tight stiff muscles in the back. Short muscle is never good. That is why it is recommended that you stretch before you run, lift weights, or perform yoga to relieve stress (stress = short muscle remember?). Yoga is the safest and most widely accepted form of stress relief for which there is no substitute, but there are deep spots in our bodies (like for me in between my left shoulder blade and spine) that yoga is ineffective. This tool digs it’s way in there and stretches those “trigger points” or short muscle and not only relieves the pain after a short period of agony, but also helps nurture the spine to go where it’s supposed to winning that tug of war battle between short muscle and the natural position of our bodies.

Final thoughts:

If you have already consulted a doctor, ask that specialist if this product is right for you. Adjusting your back too often will cause more problems than you started out with, and the primary use of this product is for trigger point and short muscle stretching and releasing. As with everything common sense dictates this tools effectiveness, and for me it’s worth is considerable.

Convenient

by Susan H from Bradenton, FL on 2010-03-21
It takes a few tries to get used to using this. Once you get the positioning down (which would be different for everyone) it really works well in releasing tight muscles and tension points. The size is great, I was able to throw it in my suitcase and bring it when I travel.

Description

he Knobble II is the newly designed cousin of the all-wood classic favorite of therapists and self care enthusiasts. Still about the size of a standard doorknob, it is made of durable polymer. The base is held in the palm of the hand, and the smoothly rounded tip is used to apply pressure to trigger points in soft tissue. The Knobble II has the added benefit of a soft band of non-latex, Santoprene around the base that allows for friction techniques. Bodyworkers often use the Knobble II to save wear and tear on their hands when applying deep, prolonged pressure to knots or strands of contracted muscle. But the Knobble II is not meant to replace your healing hands, only to help them do more and last longer. Remember to position yourself in such a way that you use your weight, not just your strength, to apply pressure to the muscle. Avoid direct pressure against the spine and other bones.

Solid piece of plastic. I like the rubberized ring around the base for a better grip as well as for massaging larger areas.

by mada09 from Davis, Ca United States on 2010-08-13
This works great for rubbing out knots in the back and hips. The grippy part and shape make it easy to hold and prevent hand/thumb fatigue.

Money-saving Massage

by oldenuf from on 2010-08-01
I purchased the original Knobble which was wood. I have used it for about a decade now. It has saved me from many a restless night and days following nights with no sleep. This newer version, the Knobble II, is lighter and the red color makes it more visible in the depths of a travel bag. It is great for intense massage of knotted and cramped muscles. I have abandoned electronic massage tools for this product, which is both energy-saving and adjusts easily to the individual’s needs.

Have for over a year and it’s a no go!

by Lincoln County MT from Extreme NW Montana on 2010-07-31
Had high hopes for using this item but it doesn’t cut mustard so to speak.
It is difficult to apply and use on your lower legs and calves as well as shins.
It’s a waste of money for me and I might look into the ones that another reviewer here
says has some flex to them and therefore might work better. This is awkward to use
at best.

Recommended by this Physical Therapist

by Wuzz from on 2010-06-27
I am a Physical Therapist and our clinic has both a “Tiger Tail” and “The Stick”. It is really a matter of personal preference which one works better for patients…

Tiger Tail is good for people who like to apply more pressure while rolling out a muscle and it WON’T pull your hair out, so Men in particular tend to like the Tiger Tail better. The Tiger Tail seems less flimsy than The Stick so in the clinic we use Tiger Tail more frequently than The Stick unless I have a “sensitive” individual (in that case, I use The Stick)

The Stick is preferred by people who don’t like as much focal pressure on any one part of the muscle. The more pressure that you apply with The Stick, the more it “gives” and curves around the body area, thus decreasing the focal pressure on any given area. So if you tend to be more sensitive with pressure this one may be better for you.

As far as actually getting into any trigger points in a muscle, a Backnobber or Theracane is more appropriate for that (again it is a matter of personal preference as to which one is right for you).

compared to the stick?

by D. Omara from Ann Arbor on 2010-05-20
I do not think it is reasonable to compare this product to The Stick. It is not on the same level. The stick has spindles that penetrate the muscle in ways that a foam roller can’t, and since a foam roller can’t, tiger tail can’t. Tiger Tail also has no flex to it, it does not give so it does not wrap around the muscle and it is too stiff for many users. The marathon stick, and travel stick both have a good deal of flex to them. The comparison is not accurate.

Works great, manufacturing quality was inconsistant ****But replacement pair is great!

by Ratwurkz from ATL, GA USA on 2010-05-06
I’ve had ongoing back issues for a few years now, so I was excited to see these at a very reasonable price on Amazon. They work fantastic but one of the two handles has loosend and is slowly deteriorating already! The wood is intact, but the silver ring at the base came unglued two days ago, so that’s any easy fix right? And just tonight the metal “rod” is sliding from side to side within the handle! I’m the only one that uses the Bongers, so it’s not a matter of over-use, or mis-handling. I already threw my box away, not thinking that one of the two Bongers would do this so quickly. It appeared to be a very sturdy product when I received it last week.

Now I’m afraid to use this on myself as one of the metal rods could launch right out of the handle! I’m contacting the seller to see if I can do a swap-out. If I can get a pair that don’t have the same QC issue, this will go up to 5 stars, as it is a great massage tool!

***********UPDATE**** May 13, 2010

After some confusing correspondence with Amazon CS, I sent an email to Bodyback directly and just yesterday I received a replacement pair. This pair is actually different! The Ball-end is still blue, but the steel rod on this pair were a blued-steel and the handles a stained golden-oak color (like the Amazon pic), whereas the first pair I received were a shiny steel with clear stained wood handles. Even the box was different between each pair. It’s obvious the replacement pair are of a better quality than the first set and I am extremely pleased!
It took awhile to get the issue resolved, but it IS resolved and I am pounding my aches away!

I’ve changed my rating from 4 to 5 stars.

Nice but can get tiring

by Robert Billingham from Noblesville, IN USA on 2010-03-26
I really enjoy the sensation, I have lower back problems and these seem to help, you just have to be careful where you hit. My only complaint is that my wife can’t use it on me all the time.

Fun Stress Relief!

by D. Smith from Tennessee on 2008-02-24
They pack a punch, but it’s relief you can’t get otherwise. The tools are very flexible…not like drum sticks! They bend slightly when in use. I love this product, and using it can be quite quite comical. It’s stress relief for the recipient and the “drummer!” Give them a try, but do not expect the impact to be gentle. I like them. I have no regrets.

Great for neck/shoulder pain.

by Jynanntonnyx from WA on 2010-08-20
As a result of a car accident, I have a reversed curvature in my neck which makes my right trapezius spasm almost constantly. These massage balls help me keep the pain at bay (along with physical therapy and heating pad application).

Tension reliever!!!

by Julia from on 2010-06-28
Item has a little more give than another brand that I already have does, but it still works well when used against a wall or when placed under your back when lying down and rolling around slightly or used on the floor for your foot. Some people may even prefer this softer version better. Great for sore muscles/nerve damage due to shingles around the shoulder blades!!! I bought several for gifts.

Depends on sensitivity

by C. C. Emmons from Drexel Hill, PA, United States on 2010-05-24
I ordered 2 of these balls – one for myself and one for my husband. He has very sensitive feet and has had a hard time adjusting to the sharpness of the spikes. (part of the problem may also be the quantity of the spikes.) The initial uses may be quite uncomfortable if you dive in by putting a lot of pressure on the ball!

I love it though. I start by rolling my feet gently over the ball then start pressing harder once my feet are used to the spikes. I’ve been using mine for a few days consistently and I feel that I’m getting significant relaxation in my feet and relief from a minor case of plantar fasciitis. It also seems very durable!

These balls are hollow. They are stiff enough to stay spherical with only a little pressure but do compress about 35-40% when you put a lot of pressure on them. The spikes themselves stay stiff so even when squished the ball is delivering a massage.

Your mileage may vary. If you have very sensitive feet, this may not be the best massage ball to start with because of the stiffness and number of spikes. I find it very helpful, durable and cheerful. Plus, that color yellow is hard to lose under my desk!

not firm at all

by bt from on 2010-01-22
i got this thinking it’d be a good option instead of packing up (and possibly losing) my pair of goosebumps, but this is definitely not comparable. while it’s prickly (which is good), the ball feels like it’s not fully inflated, so i’m not getting a strong massage when i’m rolling it under my aching feet. so disappointing. guess i’ll be picking up another pair of goosebumps after all.

May not be fair to the product

by V. Lamberton from Mechanicsburg, PA on 2009-05-01
Believe it or not, I ordered this product for our dog. When we got her, she brought her favorite toy (a blue ball similar to this one). I wanted to make sure that she had more when her favorite one wore out. Not only does she keep it with her faithfully, but she loves to play catch with it at every chance. However, it turns out that the one that she had was actually one of the dryer balls. So this one here was too large and too hard on her teeth to catch. So, I don’t feel that my opinion would be fair to the product.

My neck loved it… until it broke (massager broke, not neck)

by Brad Smith from Upstate, SC United States on 2010-06-25
This is a terrific product. The adjustable ball/triggers feel like they are a slightly soft outer shell wrapped around a firmer inner shell. Perfectly designed.

This product is a giant seafood-shell cracker and you are a crab. It pinches and compresses muscles very nicely. This is terrific for doing the back of the neck which is where I used it… until mine broke :-(

The manufacturer warns about using too much pressure. The back of my neck is somewhat tender compared to a large leg muscle. I did not think I was using too much pressure but obviously did so and it broke.

The rod portion of the mechanism is made of hard plastic. It appears I may be able to repair it by inserting a steel rod inside.

If I cannot fix it I will likely repurchase another one. That gives you an idea how much I like this. My four stars is not five only because it broke. My neck misses it.

Simple and effective

by K. Scott from on 2010-03-22
It’s worth the money. It’s hard to do anything similar with your own thumbs or hands. The center setting for the balls works well on my neck. Really does help release some of the tension in the muscles. And you have control over the intensity of pressure. The narrow setting for the balls works well squeezing the traps at the top of your shoulders. I had to use the string in order to do that. Worked fine. Glad I bought this contraption. It’s easy to put together and is effective on the areas I care about the most.

Great Product/Great Customer Service…

by Bernardo Carpio from Sacramento, CA on 2009-08-16
I work as a table game dealer in a casino and my arms and shoulders hurt almost every day, not to mention my thighs and legs for standing almost the whole 8 hours at work. I have a Hitachi wand massager and the shiatsu neck and foot massagers that I use every now and then but they seem not to be enough. I am so happy that I came across this item at Amazon because it does a lot of relief to my muscles which I cannot find on my other massagers — enough pressure force to relieve pain. The product does what the description says and more depending on your creativity– arms, knuckles, shoulders, thighs, legs and back. And as a friendly reminder, all the parts should be screwed as tightly as possible and inspected before every use because mine accidentally snapped after using it every day for over a week. I emailed bodyback immediately, got a response the following day and the replacement arrived in due time. Amazing product/amazing customer service.

AccuMassage Self Massage Tool

I needed more instructions on how to use the tool. However, once I learned to use it, it feels great. You do have to play around with it to get to the spots you need. I find I am getting better the longer I use it. It is certainly a unique tool.

Good but requires work

by travel from on 2009-05-23
This product is nice, once you get accustomed to using it. Its a little complicated and removing the balls and switching them for every spot you want to work on is more than a person in pain wants to do. I like the tapping that the ball does on sore areas with one of the handles removed. I prefer the body cane instead.

Looks are misleading!

by Stephanie Martin from Savannah GA on 2010-06-28
As with the Tetracom Massagers, this item is the exact same. It has no balance. It just four random knobs poking out. It is impossible to use on yourself due to lack of balance and pressure. You will need someone else to use this item to dig into your muscles for you. Not what I needed.

Obviously I can’t reach my own back with it like I can with theracane, but it is great if you have someone with very strong hands to apply pressure to trigger points.

The only issue that I have seen after a few sessions is that my wife’s hands get sore pretty quick due to the way the Jacknobber II applies pressure to her hand. It is much better than trying to get to trigger points and apply consistent pressure with a thumb though…

Absolutely fantastic!

I am so happy I found this tool. I was on here searching for massagers and came across it and figured it was worth trying. It is awesome. I have tension that builds up in my shoulder blade area and I need deep massage/pressure to get in there and work it out. My husband has to use his elbows and even that isn’t hard enough to do it for me sometimes. This thing really does work, I love it. Flat out love it. On him I use the bigger knobs because he doesn’t like it too deep/hard. That gives a really good overall massage. The smaller ones really get in there on me though. The only drawback is I have to wait until he’s home to use it on me!
The size is perfect too, fits right in your hand.

Good product

This tool allows a weaker person to apply more pressure in specific points without tiring as fast. I use this tool along with the Palmassager for a good massage. Excellent purchase for people who either want to self-massage or to assist another in giving a pressure point type of massage with easier effort.

Excellent massager.

by Michele Blecic from Lombard, IL USA on 2010-07-14
I bought this on the recommendation of my personal trainer, and it is excellent for massaging my legs. The length is perfect for me. There are 8 beads, each about 1 inch in length, for 8 inches to massage with. The handles are just a little wider than my hands, so I can get a firm grip without having too much extra length getting in the way.

This is a great massager for anybody that has leg cramps. I love it after working out, especially after a leg workout with lifting. Its especially good when my calves are cramping up after lifting or cardio.

The product is as promised & husband enjoys after long bike rides. Although I was charged for insufficient postage and did attempt to contact seller to resolve to no avail. Disappointed I was charged for their error.

It works well.

by J. Petersen from on 2009-08-17
It is good and does work. But you it takes one day after you use it for the knots or pain to go away. It looks good and is worth the money. I do not regret my purchase. It is better than other massaging tools i have used.
