Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is a perennial woody shrub native to the semiarid regions of southern Arizona, southern California and northwestern Mexico.
Jojoba is strictly speaking not an oil but a wax, as it contains a unique array of pure monounsaturated liquid wax esters, long chains of fatty acids and alcohols, rather than the usual large branched triglyceride molecules of other seed oils.
Chemically it is almost identical to the skin’s sebum, which makes it ideal for use in skin care, body and hair care products, especially as a moisturizer.
Spanish explorers recorded that the Native American Indians of the Sonora Desert extracted the oil from jojoba seeds for various cosmetic and medicinal purposes, such as treating sores and wounds.
What is Jojoba oil and where does it come from
Its botanical name is Simmondsia chinensis and it is the only member of the botanical family Simmondsiaceae.
Jojoba is used as a carrier oil for other essential oils and herbal extracts. However it also has remarkable properties of its own and is used in natural skin care products for its anti-inflammatory, moisturising and restorative properties.
The liquid wax is extracted from the nuts of the Jojoba plant for its excellent moisture control and superb emollient properties. It meets today’s needs for simple, natural botanical ingredients that actually work.
Jojoba’s safety is well established and its extraordinary oxidative stability helps to avoid the risk of rancidity. This characteristic also reduces the user’s risk of damage from free radicals.
Jojoba is extracted by the method known as ‘cold pressed’ to yield a silky golden liquid wax.
What are the properties in Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil contains straight- chained C20 and C22 fatty acids and alcohols and two unsaturated bonds, which make the oil susceptible to many different types of chemical manipulations. The extracted oil is relatively pure, non-toxic, biodegradable, and resistant to rancidity(1).
Using of Jojoba oil in Natural Skin Care Products
Excess sebum dissolves in jojoba to leave pores clean, which makes it suitable for use in almost any skin type. Jojoba also contains natural collagen that is almost identical in structure to that present in human skin. It is very rich in natural vitamin E and is a powerful anti-oxidant.
These and other properties of Jojoba make it a very useful ingredient in natural skin care products and it is often included as an ingredient in facial and body moisturizers, facial cleansers, natural anti-aging skin care products, shaving lotions and After-shave creams.
Jojoba can be combined with other ingredients such as borage and evening primrose oils, anti-oxidant vitamins such as natural vitamin A & E and herbal extracts that contain phyto-hormones like clary sage and wild yam to create a powerful moisturiser that is ideal for mature, dry and sensitive skin.
It can also be use on its own as a skin moisturiser in people suffering acute flare-up of eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis to help soothe and hydrate the skin.
