How to make soy candles
Soy candles are natural and burn cleaner then paraffin wax. The popularity of them is increasing. While soy wax is a bit more expensive than paraffin wax, people have used and soy candles are quickly becoming addicted to them.
Soy wax is a vegetable wax which is made from soybeans. The oil is extracted from soy flakes and hydrogenated. Most of the world's soybeans are grown in the States United in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana. It is believed the soy candles that burn cleaner then paraffin candles. This is true to some extent. All candles emit soot. There is no way around that. However, paraffin candles emit black soot, while white emitting soot soy candles. While the soot is not harmful to people, the soot blank is a little cleaner then black.
The only thing that is really different about making soy candles then paraffin candles is the wax. Both use the same techniques and equipment. You can use a double boiler to melt the wax. A double boiler is a small pot with the wax is in a larger container filled with water that is placed at the top of the stove. Heat the wax to 150 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Be careful not to keep the wax melted above 150 degrees Fahrenheit for too long, as it may burn the wax that will give a yellowish appearance. This simply means that each pound of soy wax, use 1.12 oz of fragrance oil. If concentration of fragrance is too high, it can bleed through the sail. The wax can be about 140 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Then wax can be poured into the mold to cool. Be careful not to pour the wax at very low temperatures or the candle could crack. The wax should be between 95 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Moreover, should not use water to cool quickly sail. This could also cause the candle to crack.
While soy wax candles and paraffin candles are almost equal, there are a couple of differences. Soy wax is a soft wax so it is not suitable for some types of candles. If you can do with paraffin wax candles can make soy wax candles.
