Can essential oils make you feel poorly?

I started putting pure lavender oil (neat) on a tissue and have been inhaling this daily for a few weeks now. Around the time I started doing this I developed some cold symptoms, mainly runny nose and a bit sinusy. I have noticed that when I snif the lavender it seems to makes my nose run. Can essential oils do this – or do I just have a coincidential cold?

Well, if your cold ends when you are using this rubbish, the quacks would claim it was a result of using the oils.

So sure, by the quacks’ own logic, if you develop a cold while using them, the oils must be to blame for it.

Why a Little Goes a Long Way With Essential Oils

A liquid that is typically purified, most often by water or steam, from stems, leaves, roots, bark, flowers, or other plant compounds is known as an essential oil. However, they don’t really feel like oils at all. Only several such as lemongrass, orange, and patchouli have a yellow or yellowish-brown color, while most are clear. They also carry the exact perfume as the plant it was extracted from. A little goes a long way with these oils, since the smell at times can be overwhelming.

Not Perfume or Fragrance Oils

While real plants are the source for essential oils, fragrance oils are artificially created or contain artificial elements and don’t provide any therapeutic benefits that essential oils do. Fragrances are quite frequently chemically based. The chemicals used are created by man, which means it can cause skin irritation, rashes, and possibly allergic reactions. Aromatherapy must be natural in order for it to be effective. This means that it comes from a source that is pure, then diluted by being mixed with carrier oil. This is why fragrances can’t be used for aromatherapy.

Benefits

Carrier oil, which includes oils such as grapeseed, sunflower, sweet almond, and so on, is used to dilute essential oils before being applied to the skin. Breathing them in carefully can be beneficial for one’s health, as the lungs that the bloodstream are engrossed by molecules. The most popular among all these is lavender essential oil.
