When reading the label to seek INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient) name, Butyrospermum parkii.
• Cocoa Butter: A soothing ingredient that helps to minimize dryness and helps improve skina ™ € s elasticity. Cocoa butter is a yellowish vegetable fat most often used to soften skin. It is solid at room temperature environment but melts on contact with skin. Cocoa butter is made during the manufacture of cocoa and chocolate. • Jojoba (pronounced Ho Ho Ba), olive, grapeseed, avocado and sweet almonds are also great additions to hand and body lotions. Each has unique characteristics that are beneficial for the skin. Jojoba oil is especially good for mature skin, while the grape seed oil is often recommended for acne and oily skin. Avocado Oil penetrates the skin easily and sweet almond oil is suitable for most skin types.

Other ingredients to note:

• Vegetable glycerin: Has emollient, such as can soften and soothe the skin. It is hygroscopic, which means it attracts moisture from the air and helps the outer layer the epidermis of the skin to retain moisture. Glycerin is available in plant and animal derived forms. I prefer glycerine obtained from vegetable oils, palm or coconut. The INCI name is glycerin vegetable glycerine.

• Rosemary Extract (ROE): Acts as an antioxidant natural, a natural preservative that reduces the rate of oxidation of oils that oxidize quickly and extends the life of your lotion. Natural substances such as ROE show antimicrobial activity, however, is usually adequate for broad spectrum protection and additional preservative is needed. The INCI name for ROE is Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) Leaf extract.
• CQ and Cosmocil OptiPhos: Some creams and body creams contain water, however, most lotions do and water based products need of condoms to prevent the growth of bacteria. The two I prefer are Cosmocil OptiPhos CQ and because they are soft, that condoms are effective paraben free and non-release formaldehyde. Cosmocil CQ is commonly used in baby wipes and contact lens solutions. The INCI for Cosmocil CQ is water, biguanide polyaminopropyl and the INCI name for OptiPhos is Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl glycol. Commercial side and body lotions and some handmade lotions are sometimes loaded with preservatives to keep them fresh for long. Preservatives extend the shelf life of the lotion and help keep them free of bacteria, but sometimes the preservatives are unhealthy and can cause skin problems. Some commonly used preservatives are paraben or formaldehyde based. Germaben (INCI: Propylene glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben) Germall Liquid Plus (INCI: Propylene glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Butyl Iodopropynl) LIQUAPAR Optima (INCI: Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Isopropylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Butylparaben) and Phenonip (INCI: Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben) are preservatives that contain parabens.
• Essential oils and fragrance: There is much controversy these days regarding fragrance oils added to the hand and body lotions due to the fact that most fragrance oils contain phthalates. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has done a study that evaluated phthalates in children's toys and recommended that toy manufacturers remove phthalates from rattles and teething rings soft until more research is done.
