Neuromuscular massage is applied to a specific point in the body. It is usually used to relieve tension and pain in the patient. Results are achieved by focusing in a muscle group, so the massage therapist can find the point of tension and relieve stress on your body. This will in turn reduce pain.

This type of therapy is applied to individual muscles, and is a form of deep tissue massage. It is often used after trauma to the muscles and soft tissues. Help relieve pressure on nerves, which can be caused by injury. This massage therapy also increase blood flow, which further reduces pain.

Neuromuscular massage works in intense knots of tense muscles radiating to other parts of the body. The massage releases such triggers and relieves pain in various parts of the body. This type of massage therapy is often very useful for low back pain, especially when caused by muscle tension.

There are 5 elements that cause pain. Neuromuscular Massage addresses the following topics:

Ischemia: when blood does not flow to the soft tissues, they become very sensitive to touch

Trigger Points: When muscles are irritated and the pain started radiating to other parts of the body.

Nerve compression or compression: No pressure on the nerve caused by soft tissue, bone or cartilage.

Posture distortion: the muscles are unbalanced and do not move properly

Biomechanical Dysfunction: the entire musculoskeletal system achieves the balance due to improper use of muscles.

The techniques used in neuromuscular massage:

The therapist will alternate between the levels of pressure on the area where the patient is suffering from muscle spasms. The fingers, knuckle and elbow is usually used. The pressure should only be done from ten to thirty seconds.

When the muscle is in spasm, (in a tight knot) will be very painful to touch. This is caused mainly by lack of blood flow. This sets in motion a chain of events due to lack of blood flow to the muscles are not receiving enough oxygen. Lactic acid is produced due to oxygen deficiency. The lactic acid that causes muscle pain after the activity.

When the muscle is relaxed through massage therapy, lactic acid will be released, and blood oxygen and begin to flow into the muscle. This in turn provides relief to the patient. Initially, the pressure of the massage will be a little painful, but as the treatment continues, symptoms are relieved. It is important to drink adequate amounts of water to help this process.

After about 24-36 hours, the pain and the pain should disappear. The patient should experience a relief at least 7-14 days, since the muscles should remain relaxed for that period. This is a very useful form of therapy massage and can be used for athletes or anyone who suffers after effects from trauma or muscle strain.
