Massage Therapy for severely autistic son?
My sixteen year old has been responding really well to massage therapy. After a session, he really relaxes.
He gets a professional massage about once a week, but strangely, he seems to like MY massages better – he’s more relaxed when I give him a massage while we’re on the couch, rather than his professional massage therapist who takes care of him, usually. He seems to like scalp, shoulder, and neck massages best. Since he prefers my massages, I was wondering, are there any massage techniques I can use that may help him? Any special oils for massage?
Also, could you suggest some alternative calming techniques that I can use on him?

He is probably responding differently to you because you already share a bond with him (as his mother). While it is nice that he enjoys those moments with you, the professional DOES-or at least should- have much more training medically and I suggest he gets his real massages from her (there’s a difference between a real massage and someone rubbing your back). You may actually injure him, whether its directly or in the long-term unless you have professional training too.
I have had a couple clients who have chronic back problems now from receiving massages from their spouses over the years. Again, while i think bonding with your son is great, and RUBBING his back is just fine and actually benefits him, it would be wise to stick with the professional.
As for calming techniques, try meditation (google and youtube will give you plenty of examples), deep breathing, warm baths with Epsom salts (any drugstore), some classical music-think mozart-has also been shown to help people with autism (and many other things, like seizures).

- Satisfies the need for caring, safe and nurturing touch
But while having your first massage you will feel a bit inconvenient feeling. But after massage therapy you will have a feeling of achievement or relaxation of mind. But be careful to have your first massage visit a good massage therapist. The pains in everyday life can be treated also with massage therapy.
