So what kind of scents are available and what does one use? It really depends on what your goals are for that particular meditation or yoga session. Are you trying to relieve stress? Then you might use Lavender….Have you been fighting a cold? Then you might try Hyssop. Are you trying to gain energy and wake up? Lavender is a great stress reliever, promoting peace and well-being. Because of it’s stress relieving ability and can be used to treat anxiety, insomnia and stomach aches. The oil is extracted from the flowering spikes of lavender and has a sweet, floral and slightly sharp scent.
And the beauty of therapeutic plant oils is that they represent the absolute maximum of growing, harvesting and processing qualities to give us an essence that is so pure that it resonates with the body’s own composition. In the hands of experts these 100% pure essential oils can be formulated to integrate with the brain’s natural response systems to promote specific desirable functions. There are many ways make use of the aromatherapy essential oils. Commonly, these fragrant oils are placed in an oil burner to evaporate. The fragrance then diffuses and fills the whole room. Use lavender extracts to relieve insomnia and lemon extracts to get rid of any odor molecules in the atmosphere.
There are several different scents that you can choose from and all of these will benefit you. Which ones you decide on will depend on your needs and personal tastes. Because of the complex molecular structure of essential oils, they are being researched more intently for their ability to offer resistance to infection. The scientific community is paying more attention to the chemical components of these oils which are pressed or distilled from the stems, leaves, fruits and flowers of plants, and testing their usage as antibiotic and antiviral agents with good result.
Some oils are particularly appropriate for both depression and anxiety such as lavender, which is relaxing and calming; frankincense, which is balancing and has been called a natural antidepressant; and ylang ylang, which is known for it sedative properties. Other oils for depression include bergamot, lemon, clary sage, jasmine, neroli, melissa and rose. It is better to tackle the stressors in your life head on. A stressor is something that is causing you stress. So, I’m not saying that aromatherapy is a substitute for figuring out your stressors and combating them. I’m only saying that aromatherapy can help you become strong enough to beat your stressors.
Use equal parts of Lavender flowers, rolled oats, Linden flowers, Catnip and Lemon Balm. You can buy 1/2 oz of each ingredient at a local natural food store. Mix them together. To make a day’s supply, use 4 tbs of blend per quart of boiling water. Pour water over herbs and allow to steep for 10 minutes. The essential oils diffusers work a couple different ways. A candle diffuser uses a reservoir to hold the oil which is then heated up by the candle and released into the air. Another type is a fan diffuser which uses a fan to blow air through an absorbent pad, spreading the scent throughout the room. Another type is a nebulizer.
