Artefill – Permanent Solution to Fight Wrinkles
For the first time in U.S. history, the FDA has approved a permanent cosmetic filler. Artefill was approved in late 2006 for the correction of nasolabial folds (smile lines.) Safety data shows no significant side effects and side effects minor equal to that of placebo.
Artefill is a purified version of Artecoll, which has been used safely in Canada for many years. However, in order to receive approval from the FDA in the U.S., Arts, the maker of Artefill, which is necessary to make the microspheres of PMMA (see below) plus uniform size. Artefill therefore is a safer, better product than its Canadian cousin Artecoll.
Although studies show Artefill a steady improvement in patients five years after their injections, Artefill is expected to last forever. Like the rest of the face, the areas that are injected into the normal aging will therefore necessary improvements as more expensive volume is lost with aging.
The results are immediately after injection and 1-2 treatments are required in general. Other "off-label" uses the popular will probably inject marionette lines (Lines between the corners of the mouth and chin) and scar revision.
Artefill contains tiny PMMA (poly methyl methacrylate) microspheres in a gel purified bovine collagen with an anesthetic for comfort during injection. The collagen acts as a vehicle for PMMA and dissolves over several months leaving the microspheres in your skin. These microspheres provide structure as scaffolding, the skin then build its own collagen around. PMMA is one of the most used synthetic materials for medical implants.
Restylane and Juvederm fillers remain the choice for lips and fine lines and Radiesse is often the best choice for sculpting and fat cheeks. Artefill may be the new treatment for frown lines (lines between the nose and the corners of the mouth) when permanent correction is desired. Artefill can also be used to fill marrionette lines (lines and depressions below the mouth) fill in scars and smooth contour depressions and crooked nose (the "working lunch nose"). Artefill is also often used in combination Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse, Botox and laser rejuvenation treatments such as Fraxel, IPL and V integral beam, no downtime rejuvenation.
Treatments usually last 10-20 minutes and are usually painless. Depending on the areas treated, more than one syringe may be needed to create the desired results. Improvements recommended 1-3 months after initial treatment to "tune" results. These may require only the smaller 0.4 cc syringe.
Some preparation is needed before Artefill treatment. You should be skin tested 4 weeks before your treatment to screen for allergy to bovine collagen. Some doctors, including myself, recommend two skin tests, 2 weeks apart. It is also recommended to wait at least 6 months after having had a temporary filling placed in the same area, to give you the opportunity to dissolve, leaving room for the new landfill. To reduce the risk of bruising you should avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E and similar medications for 1-2 weeks before treatment. Taking Arnica Montana, a natural oral medication on the day of your treatment and for several days after of its treatment helps reduce bruising and swelling.
After injection, some common, temporary reactions, injection-related can occur: tenderness, redness, itching, bruising, shock, pain or swelling. These usually resolve within days. Rare side effects potential of all dermal fillers may be lumps, abscesses and granulomas, which are usually treatable.

From results Artefill Permanent probably should only have this treatment if you want permanent results. Depending on who you go, there is a possibility that could have a permanent bump or other undesirable outcome. Do your research and make sure it is treated by an experienced injector who is also artistic with her or his technique. Ask to see before and after photos of other patients and go to someone who is a specialist in aesthetic medicine (dermatologists, plastic surgeons and head and neck surgeons usually have more experience with cosmetic injections.) If the treatment you do not want a permanent implant, Juvederm, Radiesse or Restylane may be preferable. If you have never used a cosmetic filler, I recommend trying one of these fillers time before having a permanent filler.
